The historical Mahdia was founded in the early 10th century as the capital of Tunisia - an ideal location due to its proximity to the sea. Today, Mahdia is a quiet port town, well-known for its fishing industry and beautiful olive groves. Some of the ancient buildings dating back to 10th century have survived relatively well, and now form an important part of Mahdia's attractions. Poised between Sousse and Sfax and boasting some of the finest sandy beaches in Tunisia, Mahdia remains remarkably unspoilt and authentic. Palm-scattered coastline with the ruins of Fatimid port at the background welcome back the colourful wooden fishing boats returning back to the port. One of the favourite pastimes in Mahdia is to sit back and enjoy the beauty of this scenic town whilst waiting for the freshly caught fish to be grilled.

Take a stroll around the town, its narrow cobbled streets and visit some of the most important historical buildings in Tunisia including the Great Mosque (built in 10th century) and the 16th century Ottoman Fort. Browse the local markets and take home a piece of Mahdia; beautifully made silverware, tufted woven carpets, scented oils or carved wood souvenirs.
