Holidays To Tunisia
Blue skies, warm Mediterranean climate and wonderful heritage and traditions, Tunisia is beautifully versatile. Just two hours from the UK, and boasting up to 12 hours of sunshine during the summer months, this North African country is a perfect choice for the traditional sun, sea and beach -holiday. Soft sandy beach and balmy Mediterranean coast, scents of jasmine and mystical spices, freshly caught fish and other seafood - although Tunisia's coastal resorts have captured the hearts of many holiday makers over the years, there is so much more to explore beyond beautiful beaches. We feature holidays to the well-known beach areas of Hammamet and Sousse, lavish Gammarth, coastal tourist resorts of Borj Cedria, Mahdia, Port El Kantaoui and Skanes.
The official language is Arabic, although French was inherited as the unofficial language after Tunisia was a French Protectorate between 1881 and 1956. Today's Tunisian, descendants of indigenous Berbers, are a real mix of ethnicities and modern Mediterranean people.
Tunisia's gastronomic delights form an important part of the culture. The main ingredients are very Mediterranean; tomatoes, herbs, olive oil and fresh bread, which are fused with African and Berber traditions. Hare, venison, lamb, veal and chicken are blended with local spices creating tasty stews and soups. Fresh tuna, squid and sea bass can also be found on most menus - but it is the national dish of succulent couscous that appears on every menu accompanied with much-loved harissa (hot red pepper sauce). Tunisians love mint tea! It is often served sweetened with a sprinkle of pine nuts.
Tunisia, like other North African countries, enjoys rich heritage and history. Traditional souks, medinas and Kasbahs create a real sense of place and should not be missed during your stay. Medinas are a wonderful place to learn more about the local culture and way of life - and souks are the best place to buy local produce and practise your haggling skills.
The best-known, and one of the most beautiful, medina is situated in Tunis. The Medina of Tunis features stunning architecture with white-washed walls and features hundreds of historical monuments, fascinating souks, grand gates and important living quarters. This ancient Islamic city has been listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A few kilometres outside Tunis, the city of Carthage, which was founded by Phoenicians and home of Hannibal, was once one of the greatest cities of the ancient world. It is still Tunisia's most popular historical site with fantastic history and splendid views over the gulf. Highlights include Byrsa Hill (start here to get a good overview of Carthage), the Antonine Baths and the Roman Amphitheatre (still used for summer festivals).
The beauty of Tunisia is the amazing combination of lovely beaches and rich, historical sites. Inviting azure waters, soft sand, pleasant all-year climate, world-class golf courses, rejuvenating Thalasso spas and a range of family activities ensure a happy holiday experience for the whole family. Safe, shallow waters create a perfect setting for waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving - and the six stunning marinas are ideal places for dining out and exploring the stylish, modern surroundings.
