This second largest city in Sicily is located on the east coast of the island at the foot of the most prominent landmark of Sicily, Mount Etna. Reaching 3,320 metres, this giant mountain is not only one of Sicily’s most known landmarks, but it is the tallest volcano in Europe and one of the most active volcanos in the world. Catalia itself is a city of full of historical treasures. As a result of having an active volcano at its doorstep, Catalia has been rebuilt many times leaving behind an interesting array of different styles and buildings. The prominent architectural style is Baroque boasting grand designs including excessive amount of details, large facades and impressive frescoes (wall art painted on fresh plaster). The entire city has been included in the World Heritage Site list.

In addition to the beautiful Mount Etna and the impressive architecture, visit Catalia’s vibrant markets. Piazza Duomo hosts a large fish market and the Via Etnea area hosts a bustling food and clothes market every day except Sundays. To get an interesting insight into local life, visit one of Catalia’s Kiosks. These small ‘bars’ sell refreshments such as limoncello (an Italian lemon liqueur) or the non-alcoholic alternative, sletz al limone, which is made of soda water and freshly-squeezed lemon juice.
